I've made some progress, yay! Today, I'm sharing the ORC Guest Bedroom Week 2 progress.
It feels like I don't have much to show, but I've been working a ton on it! So, trust me, I'm proud of the little that I have to show. =)
So, the white paint has not been covering well. I'm up to three coats rolling and four edging and I still have one more edging coat to go. I'm not sure what the issue is, but I can tell you that I'm not happy about it. LOL. Going from a cream white to a stark bright white has made quite the difference in the room. The walls are feeling so fresh!
I'm also painting all the trim and doors in the room. I'm on different coats on most of them... what can I say?! No, actually, it's easier to get things done in 45 min segments with my little guy so that means only part of the edging gets done. The windows have two coats on and I'm calling them done. Don't they look good?
I've got to clean the paint off the windows, but it takes just a few minutes with a razor blade. No more taping windows for me!
Unfortunately, by giving the top part of the room a bright treatment, the ceiling is looking dingier than ever! Bummer. I'm not sure what I'll do with it. We had our house tested for asbestos before we moved in and it tested positive, so scraping the popcorn is a no-no. As is painting it. I need to do more research and maybe I'll find something. We'll see.
Ok, I'll be back next week with more progress. I know you're curious to see what's going on with the bottom half of the room.... I am too!
Anna
I totally understand the problem of covering old paint with white, especially if it's so bright! Good luck with it, hope to see more next week:))

Thanks Anna! One more to go.... =)
Reviving Charm
What a great color. It looks so fresh. Youre off to a great start!
Ashley Mayes
Thanks so much! It's taking baby steps, but I'm getting there.
Julia@Cuckoo4Design
Oh no, that's the worst when paint doesn't cover right! I wouldn't be happy either
Ashley Mayes
Totally agree! I HATE that paint and primer in one!!
Charlotte
It's coming along! The bright white window looks great! Regarding the ceiling do you think you could paint it with a paint sprayer? That way you wouldn't be disturbing the texture like rolling would, which is probably why they say not to paint it. It would be a pain, because you would have to cover EVERYTHING, but for a bright white ceiling it might be worth it!
Ashley Mayes
I don't think so. You really aren't supposed to touch the asbestos. Probably at this point, we will just ignore it until we can save enough to have it properly taken care of. Since we know it's there, we pretty much have to take care of it before we sell the house (thinking long-term).
Kristi
Awww, we're stuck with a dingy popcorn ceiling too 🙁 Everything is looking great so far! I hear ya on only having little bits of time with a little one at your feet, but you've made amazing progress so far! Can't wait to see what's up next!
Ashley Mayes
It totally stinks! Thanks Kristi!

When I saw the bright paint in your thumbnail, I had to check this out! I LOVE it. An interesting thing about the popcorn ceilings: we just moved into a new house that has popcorn throughout, and we were advised NOT to test it. Apparently if you know it has asbestos, you are legally obligated to dispose of it in a certain manner, but if you don't know, you can remove it (this can be done safely if you know how and take lots of precautions--my husband met with a guy at a local environmental agency to get advice) and put it in your trash. Anyway, I hope the paint works out with yours, but I thought that was kind of interesting. Thought I'd put it out there in case anyone else is in this situation. Your room is going to be super inviting! Looking forward to seeing how it turns out!
Ashley Mayes
Super interesting! We were going to immediately scrap all our ceilings when we moved it, but were advised to test before we did it. We were told that we would have to disclose. Interesting!!
Wendy
Hope you find a solution for your ceiling! I didn't realize you couldn't paint over asbestos, although now that I think about it it seems pretty obvious!
Ashley Mayes
I know, right?! The things we don't think about until they are right in our face. We have those moments all the time.

I know nothing about asbestos, but would it be possible to cover it? Like putting dry wall right over it? Or planks? I'm sure that's still a no no but I was curious. loving the progress and can't wait for the final result!
Ashley Mayes
Hmm, I'm not sure. I've tried to do quite a bit of research and all I'm seeing is DO NOT TOUCH unless you are having a professional get rid of it. I'll probably just ignore it.
Erin Meyer
Looks so nice! Great work. You're probably going to be so sick of paint at the end of this challenge with all those coats of paint. Not sure about that ceiling. We have popcorn ceilings in our house too and it was built in 2002- I thought that trend was out long before then. Hope you find something.
Ashley Mayes
Totally! Thanks so much Erin!
Jennifer @ Brave New Home
Looking good! We have/had asbestos in our house and had it covered rather than scraping it off. The general consensus from people we've talked to is that it's best not to disturb it. Man, I hate that stuff! Such a pain. You're doing great, keep it up!
Ashley Mayes
Thanks Jennifer!
