Awesome Colored Ceilings to Jumpstart your Room Refresh

March 15, 2025 by Ashley Mayes Leave a Comment

Join me to hear more about awesome colored ceilings to jumpstart your room refresh. From green painted ceilings to striped painted options, be inspired!

We often talk about the power of paint to transform walls, but what about that often-neglected "fifth wall" – the ceiling? I've long been a believer in the magic of a colored ceiling and, today, I'm thrilled to share a collection of rooms that prove just how impactful this design choice can be. Prepare to look up and be inspired!

Infusing Interest: Why Colored Ceilings Work

For years, ceilings have primarily been a simple white canvas. But why? A splash of color overhead can dramatically change a room's atmosphere; adding depth, personality, and a touch of unexpected charm. It's a design element that elevates a space and it's super simple to do.

There's more than just a painted ceiling in this before/after but I just wanted to get you excited about the possibility of adding more color to your home.

I've always been charmed when I see a ceiling painted an untraditional color (basically, anything other than white). I think we often forget that we have a "fifth wall" to consider in design choices. We often focus on the four walls that are in a room, but forget all about the ceiling as another large surface to have fun with.

For me, personally, I haven't had any good opportunities to go for the painted ceiling option because most of our house has asbestos popcorn on the ceiling. That said, I'm scheming and dreaming for a colored ceiling, but it may have to be in my next house. =) Just because I can't paint my ceilings, doesn't mean you can't.

Let's dive into some stunning examples of how colored ceilings can change a room!

    Inspiring Colored Ceilings

Whether you are wanting a bold painted ceiling design, or something more mellow, all of these will give you some ideas for a room refresh!

    Subtle Blue Gray Paint

We often talk about the power of paint to transform walls, but what about that often-neglected "fifth wall" – the ceiling? Gah, I just love sunroom-esque rooms. Our sunroom has really low ceilings otherwise, I'd be curious to paint its ceiling like this one.

This space evokes the feeling of a clear summer sky, creating a calming and tranquil atmosphere. Paired with neutral walls and plants, this look is perfect for a work space.

    Wall to Ceiling Color

I really love the floor to ceiling color and felt like Fiona Parke gave the best reasoning for this choice!

"Wrap around colour can be a daunting option for some clients but we often use it in rooms with pitched or oddly angled ceilings. The rafters in this London house were exposed on the top floor and not particularly pretty so we recommended to paint it all one colour - @farrowandball DeNimes. As a result the room feels bigger and calmer as using one colour has unified and simplified the space." - Fiona Parke of Johnston Parke Interiors

I adore color-drenched rooms, so wanted to share another example of one.

Pitched ceilings or sloped ceilings can often be awkward. I really think the best way of handling those types of spaces are to color-drench it all in the same color.

    Accent Painted Ceiling

How fun is this accent ceiling? I would typically imagine a ceiling like this in a nursery or playroom, but this feels fresh without being too juvenile. The color is so great, too. It's Parma Gray by Farrow and Ball.

I will say that I'm not a fan of accent walls in general although, I do think they occasionally have an ok use. For ceilings though, because they envelop the whole room, I do think you can think about it as an accent wall that works.

    Green Ceiling with Painted Beams

I'm honestly obsessed with this room! I love the pop of saturated green on the ceiling with the neutrals everywhere else. Honestly though, if you wanted even more boldness, I could also see the whole room painted green, too.

    Sophisticated Dining Room

A deep charcoal or navy ceiling in a dining room creates a sense of intimacy and drama. It draws the eye upward, highlighting chandeliers and other architectural details. This bold choice adds a touch of sophistication and makes dinner parties feel extra special.

I love how the painted ceiling design in this kid's space gives the an almost architectural feel. It really evokes a sense of style that is not typically portrayed in a kid's space.

Here's another example of stencil type details.

Instead of going the stencil on the ceiling, the ceiling is painted as a pop of color and the scallops are painted on the walls. It's a bit like the inverse affect of the kids space above.

    Hand-painted Floral Ceiling

You could get whimsical with your ceiling paint, too, and hand paint a floral mural on the ceiling. I mean, I don't have that skillset but maybe you do? Or, consider using a stencil to the get the look.

    Benefits of Colored Ceilings:

    • Adds Instant Interest: A colored ceiling is a quick and easy way to elevate a space, adding visual depth and intrigue.
    • Creates Ambiance: Different colors evoke different moods. A soft blue can create a calming atmosphere, while a deep charcoal adds drama.
    • Enhances Architectural Features: If you have crown molding or other architectural details, a contrasting ceiling color can highlight them beautifully.
    • Reflects your personality: A colored ceiling is a bold statement, showcasing your unique style and design sensibilities.

    My Personal Dream:

As someone who is currently unable to paint my own ceilings due to popcorn ceiling, I am living vicariously through these photos.
