Hospitality: Having Friends Over Amid DIY Projects

January 15, 2019 by Ashley Mayes 1 Comment

How to show hospitality... Whether you haven't decorated your living room yet or have a bathroom that has half-ripped wallpaper all over it, learn how to be more confident while having friends over amid DIY projects!

What is hospitality? How do we show other's hospitality? How do we get over feeling like what we have isn't pretty enough? These are some of the questions that we talk about and one's that I've personally struggled with. Hopefully, in today's Your Home Story podcast, you'll listen and have a change of heart when thinking about your house projects and opening up your home to others!

Hospitality and Having Friends Over Amid DIY Projects

Guys, we hosted about 7x over the course of two weeks between the week before Christmas and the week after Christmas. We sat for hours after dinner and played games in the living room with our friends and family. This was the view that they saw. The grate above the TV wasn't up and, if they looked at the baseboards at all, they saw that they were either not installed correctly (which is not the case - we just have an uneven subfloor) or they were in the midst of being installed.

As I've gotten older, I've learned to not be bugged by this sort of progress in my house. I don't think I mentioned either of those things to any of our guests, unless they asked me directly about it. I didn't apologize for my house not being "picture-perfect" nor did I make excuses for this or that not being done.

This hasn't been my personality in the past and it's caused some late nights, anxiety and just feelings over not wanting to have people over. I hope as you tune in to today's episode, you'll have a change of heart if you, too, struggle with inviting others in amid DIY projects!

We are getting ready to jump into a house building project in the next couple of years. My sister in law just moved with her family into a 100-year old farm house that they are in the process of renovating. She recently got a "kitchen" after living for 9 months with a construction zone in the kitchen area. They are excited they can finally host everyone over at their house and things are looking great. There are a ton of projects on that house that will probably take 10 years to complete but they are taking it one step at a time. None of us mind the unfinished projects. We all know it is hard to find time to get those finished and it is fun to see things come together in their own time.
