Daybed in Living room to Make a Window Reading Nook

January 18, 2024 by Ashley Mayes 4 Comments

We added a daybed in our living room to make all my reading dreams come true.

Unfortunately, there's a bit of an issue with the color... let's chat!

    Our living room backstory

For two years now, I've been keeping an eye out for a low, comfortable sofa for our space. We've wanted to replace an older sofa that we had that just wasn't comfortable.

Well, when we moved our Christmas tree in the living room this year, we all just loved how nice it was to see a bunch more of the windows. We typically have had a sofa back blocking quite a bit of them. One thing led to another and I decided to look at daybed options for our living room.

Adding A Daybed In Living Room

Once I started looking at daybed couch options for our living room, I just knew that a daybed would be a good fit. The lack of back meant that we would get more window light and I immediately got excited about making a cozy reading nook in front of the windows.

Some people would think that a daybed as a couch would be a negative because most people need or want a back when they sit down. For our space though, because we have a full-size couch and two chairs, I figured prioritizing a reading nook would be a better fit for us day-to-day. Plus, when we have people over, we hang out in our basement or in the kitchen, for the most part.

So, I narrowed down the daybed options and ordered fabric samples. I loved this daybed online. But, when I got the fabric samples, I just wasn't sure about the color on the sample. Samples are SO hard to envision because they come in super small swatches; but since I loved the image on the website, I decided to order it.

Womp womp, honestly... I hate the color. It's definitely a more light blue green (so similar to the Farrow and Ball Light Blue paint color in my son's room). My son, actually made that connection without me saying anything about it. He said it would go perfectly in his room, and he's right.

So, now... what to do with a piece that I love the feel and function of, a piece that I can't return....

I'm going to try to make it work in my living room. I've used it for a few hours now to read and it's just, honestly, the mostly delightful window reading nook. But, if I can't get past the color of it in my space, the plan is to move it to our eventual library hearth room. I have big plans for that space this year!

I often get asked how I curate things so beautifully and it's all about trial and error. This was a definite error in color and tone. It takes practice and BIGGER fabric samples. =)

I love the daybed. Try putting a throw on it and pillow. You’re so creative you’ll come up with something. Besides, nothing matches anymore. If you love it you’ll enjoy it!

Thank you! I'm working through that creative process right now to figure it out.

I know when you are comfy cozy there, you have a pile of books and a few throws. Add them and I am guessing the throws which probably match your room perfectly, help disguise the color a bit and make it all look purposeful. The color that is throwing you off will just peek out a bit.
