January 15, 2024 by Ashley Mayes 1 Comment

Copper gutters are an elegant and practical choice for homeowners. Known for their durability, aesthetic appeal, and low maintenance requirements, they have become increasingly popular among homeowners and builders.

I mean, you just have to look at a home with them and see why they are gaining popularity. They are GORGEOUS!

One of the primary advantages of copper gutters is their longevity. As a material, copper is incredibly resistant to corrosion and environmental damage, ensuring that the gutters remain functional and visually appealing for several decades. Moreover, copper boasts a unique aesthetic quality; it develops a natural patina over time, which adds a touch of vintage charm to the building's exterior.

However, copper gutters do come with certain challenges, including initial investment and installation complexities. Despite these potential drawbacks, a well-installed and maintained copper gutter system can offer substantial returns on investment and enhance the overall value of a property.

    Types of Copper Gutters

Let's chat about three popular types: K-Style Copper Gutters, Half-Round Copper Gutters, and Half-Round Euro Copper Gutters.

    K-Style Copper Gutters

These are the most common type found in homes today. They are also known as "ogee" gutters, with an elegant profile that resembles crown molding. Their attractive and classic design aligns with modern and traditional architecture alike.

The unique characteristics of K-Style Copper Gutters include:

    • Shape: A flat back to easily attach to the fascia board, and a decorative front that mimics crown molding.
    • Size: A range of sizes available, but the most common widths are 5 and 6 inches.
    • Capacity: Holds more water compared to half-round gutters due to their larger open area.

    Half-Round Copper Gutters

These are a classic and traditional style commonly found in historic or European homes. As the name suggests, these gutters have a semi-circular shape, providing a simple yet functional design.

Key features of Half-Round Copper Gutters are:

    • Shape: A semi-circular profile with a smooth, elegant curve.
    • Size: Typically come in 5 and 6-inch widths, with larger sizes available upon request.
    • Capacity: Lower water-holding capacity compared to K-Style gutters due to their smaller open area.

    Half-Round Euro Copper Gutters

These are a variation of the traditional half-round copper gutters, with improvements that enhance their functionality and durability. They are often found in European-style homes, providing an elegant and upscale appearance.

Distinct attributes of Half-Round Euro Copper Gutters include:

    • Shape: Distinctive European bead along the outer edge for added reinforcement.
    • Bracket System: Utilizes an external bracket system that reduces the chance of leaks, ensuring a sturdy and durable installation.
    • Size: Commonly available in 5 and 6-inch widths, with custom sizes possible upon request.

    Installation Process

It is highly recommended to opt for a professional installation. A skilled contractor or builder can ensure optimal efficiency and durability of your gutter system.

The installation costs may vary based on the complexity of the project, the length of guttering needed, and the location of your property. Typically, professional installation includes labor, materials, and transportation. It is also important to factor in maintenance costs; although, generally, they require minimal upkeep.

    Cost Considerations

Copper gutters are known for their durability and aesthetics, but they come at a higher price compared to other gutter materials. The cost can vary depending on factors such as the thickness of the copper (measured in ounces per square foot), the style, and the manufacturer.

To give you an idea, here's an approximate price range for copper gutters per linear foot:

    ThicknessPrice per Linear Foot
    16 oz.$12 - $18
    20 oz.$15 - $22

These prices are just for the basic materials and may not include accessories such as brackets, downspouts, and outlet tubes. It's also important to note that prices may differ depending on your region and the availability of copper.

    Labor Costs

The labor costs can also vary based on factors like the complexity of the installation, location, and the expertise of the contractor.

Some contractors charge a fixed price for the entire job, while others charge by the linear foot. On average, the labor cost ranges from $3 to $6 per linear foot. However, installation costs can go higher if your property has multiple stories, unique architectural features, or requires customized gutter solutions.

    Copper Gutter Maintenance

Regular cleaning is necessary to prevent the accumulation of debris, such as leaves and twigs, which can obstruct the flow of water. It is generally recommended to clean them at least twice a year - once in the spring and once in the fall. Make use of a ladder, protective gloves, and a gutter scoop to remove debris from the gutters. Additionally, consider installing leaf guards or gutter guards to minimize the need for frequent cleaning.

    Common repair tasks include:

    • Fixing leaks: Leaks might occur at joints or seams, which can be resolved by applying a layer of solder.
    • Reattaching end caps: If end caps come loose, they can be reattached using solder.
    • Realigning gutters: Ensure that gutters are properly aligned to allow for efficient water flow.

Honestly though, these maintenance tips and common repair tasks will be used for all types of gutter systems. Don't let any of these scare you off.

    Painted Faux Copper Gutters

If you want the look of copper colored gutters but not the price tag, there are a few examples out of there of people who have gone with painted faux copper gutters.

I have no idea how long these would hold up but they do look really nice! Hop over to Lone Oak Design Co for a breakdown of what they used, plus exterior house colors, too!

Lots of things to consider, right? I just love the look and think they can really add interest to the exterior of a home.

When we replaced our gutters and roof, I never even considered going with this option. I'm not sure if they would have been a great option for our home, but I'm pretty smitten with them when I see them on other houses.

Here's a peek at what our house currently looks like.
