Eclectic Modern Formal Dining Room Design

October 12, 2016 by Ashley Mayes 55 Comments

Hey Guys! Are you ready to see the plan for the formal dining room? I’m calling it the Eclectic Modern Formal Dining Room Design but I’m not really sure if that fits. Let’s just say it does and move forward. =)

But, before I show it to you… let me just remind you what each week of the One Room Challenge will look like.

Wednesday, Oct 5th (week 1) – Introduce your space, and tell us your plan.

Wednesday, Oct 12th (week 2) – Show us your progress. What have you accomplished? (THIS WEEK)

Wednesday, Oct 19th (week 3) – Have you encountered any setbacks? Any happy accidents?

Wednesday, Oct 26th (week 4) – How’s it going? Week 4 is the hardest!

Wednesday, Nov 2nd (week 5) – Did you revise your plan? Hang in there, you can do it.

Wednesday, Nov 9th (week 6) – The Finale – It’s all about the pictures.

Open shelving with dark cabinets and a china builtin

The goal of the space is to get it to play well with the kitchen. I’m not going crazy with anything in there but I do want to have some fun. So, here’s my plan.

Eclectic modern formal dining room design plan

Can you see that going with our kitchen? I want to bring some black touches in but not go overboard because our eat-in kitchen is dark navy/charcoal.

I think finding the balance between dark/light and pattern/no-pattern will be key. I’ve made some purchases for the space yet I’m having some major problems with others (like the table). I was originally going to refinish the table that we had in there. I think I’ve decided to just nix that idea. The table size is ok but I don’t love the lines of it. The style just is off. After shopping for another table, I’ve come to the realization that most of what I love I can’t afford or can’t get within the time frame that I need it by. So, I’m not sure what I’m going to do here. I’m keeping my eyes open but we will see what plays out.

Also, I totally can’t decide between those two lights in the design board or whether to nix both of them and just keep the chandelier that is still in our dining room.

Progress this week was mainly finalizing what the design board was going to be and making a few purchases. Next week though, I should have some actual progress to show you. Yay!

Oh, and feel free to shop the look.

I think either light would be great and pull the color from the kitchen cabinets quite nicely. Personally, I like the three-pendant one, but the other is great, also! And the rugs! LOVE!

I love the style of those Windsor chairs! And at a great price, too! Good luck with the table decision 🙂 I had a local carpenter make a tabletop for an IKEA base if that helps at all. I don’t have photos because I’m in the middle of a DR overhaul myself, but it was way more affordable than other tables I’d been looking at…

I like where this is headed and think it totally goes with your kitchen! It is so fun watching you figure out your style and see it all come together. And sadly, I can relate on wanting to buy things that are waaay too expensive and won’t show up in time anyway. 🙁 But I just keep reminding myself that where we’ll bein six weeks is a lot better than where we started!! xo

I’m catching up on the Week 2 progress before heading over to read Week 3, and I’m loving the interplay between dark and light. I hope you find a table you love soon, but if not, you could always keep what you have until you find just the right one. Don’t let the deadline of the ORC make you buy one that’snot just right.
