White Tiles Black Grout : Ultimate Guide to Achieving this Look

January 22, 2024 by Ashley Mayes Leave a Comment

Achieve the look of using white tiles black grout in bathrooms and kitchens by using this guide as inspiration!

White tiles with black grout have become a popular trend in interior design. This classic look adds a timeless touch to any space, whether it's a bathroom, kitchen, or laundry room.

One of the benefits of using black grout with white tiles is that it helps to hide dirt and stains. White grout can quickly become discolored, especially in high-traffic areas like bathrooms and kitchens. Black grout, on the other hand, is more forgiving and can help to maintain the look of the tiles for longer. Additionally, black grout can add depth and dimension to a space, making it feel more dynamic and interesting.

We used black grout in our powder room with black tiles and wow... it really made that space feel dynamic.

White tiles with black grout are a popular choice for both kitchen installations and bathroom design. This classic combination creates a clean, modern look that can complement a variety of styles, from farmhouse kitchens to contemporary bathrooms.

    Kitchen Installations

My favorite usage of the white tile with black grout look is on a kitchen backsplash with warm woods or accents around it to warm up the space. Let's look at some examples!

The above image and the image below are both the same kitchen. I wanted to share both with the styling a bit different as well as the difference in how the photos were taken so that you can see how different accents really help warm up the white tile black grout installations.

One thing about this kitchen that works well is that there's a lot of texture added to the space. There's chunky shelves over the tile and, underneath those shelves, there's everyday items. A lot of times, black grout can feel too stark, but in this case, there's so many warm elements added back in that it just feels comforting and nice.

    Bathroom Designs

White subway tile with black grout is a popular choice for shower walls, creating a sleek and timeless look. It can also be used for bathroom flooring as well.

When using white tiles with black grout in any space, it is important to consider the size of the tiles and the width of the grout lines. Larger tiles with thinner grout lines can create a more modern look, while smaller tiles can create a more traditional feel.

Most white tile black grout installs look a bit modern and stark but this timeless bathroom makeover is anything but that. The pairing of the blue colored trim and the wallpaper give this black grout white tile a warm, historical feel.

White hexagon tiles are pretty popular as are white subway tiles but I really love the choice here to mix them in this bathroom. Sometimes, white and black can come off too stark but I really think the green bathroom walls and the brass accents warm this bathroom up. It's pretty perfect, IMO.

High contrast spaces without warmer accents to break them up work best (in my opinion) in smaller spaces. This example of white subway tile with black grout in a small shower really shines instead of being overwhelming.

This bathroom has so much light drenching it that the black grout doesn't seem to be taking over. Or, honestly, it might just be a dark charcoal grout instead of a true black. I couldn't find the exact details on this grout; so, honestly, charcoal-colored grout might be it. Either way, I think this shows that with lots of white and sunlight, a little extra warmth in the way of wood isn't needed to create a great space.

Speaking of using gray grout, we used this color called oyster gray in our kitchen. It adds a bit of depth to the white 4x4 tiles but it definitely doesn't add a ton of contrast. I love the images that I shared today in this post, but I do think it's harder to get the stark look of white tile with black grout. If you feel nervous about it, don't hesitate to go with a gray grout (like I did). =)

I hope you feel inspired by these images! I had a lot of fun rounding them up for you. Let me know if one of these looks are something that you want to try!
